A wrecker truck is a vehicle designed to move motor vehicles. They are typically used when vehicles are immobilized, improperly parked, or otherwise indisposed of. Depending on the situation, these trucks may be equipped with a hook and chain, wheel lift, or Integrated tow system. Each of these types has its own unique characteristics and benefits.
Hook and chain tow truck

A hook and chain tow truck is a type of wrecker truck that uses a chain and hook to tow a vehicle. The chain is attached to a car's axle or bumper and the hook secures the vehicle's frame. Once the vehicle is hooked, the operator uses a towbar to connect the car to the tow truck. This method is most effective in getting a disabled vehicle off the road, but it can cause damage to the vehicle.

A hook and chain tow truck is also used in some circumstances to extricate a car after a collision. Because the cars of the past were essentially steel or aluminum boats on wheels, a simple hook would be more stable than a chain. However, today's cars are more complicated and pose a greater risk of being flung or toppled in towing. This is why hook and chain tow trucks can cause extensive damage.
Boom truck

Boom truck wreckers are specialized towing vehicles that utilize an adjustable boom to tow a vehicle. Depending on the type, booms can be fixed to the truck's chassis or pivot, and some are even hydraulically powered. Boom wreckers are also equipped with rubber slings that lift the vehicle off its wheels and move it to a safe location.

This type of wrecker has an impressive lift capacity, and the boom's lift mechanism can be used to lift both the front and back ends of a car. It is also capable of pulling all-wheel-drive vehicles.
Wheel lift tow truck

A wheel lift tow truck is the best choice for towing a vehicle that has been involved in a car accident. Other types of towing may worsen the accident damage. This can lead to problems with insurance companies, who may not want to cover the costs of repairs. Wheel lift tow trucks work by lifting the front and rear ends of the vehicle with a heavy-duty hydraulic crane.

These trucks are best suited for short-distance tows. They can fit through tight spaces and are fast and efficient. Despite their speed, they are still very safe for tying a car.
Integrated tow truck

Whether you need a wrecker truck for your business or are in need of an emergency tow truck, an integrated tow truck may be the right solution for your needs. These trucks have a unique design that increases their stability and allow them to tow larger loads than their tow truck counterparts. They are especially useful when hauling buses, tractor-trailers, RVs, and motorhomes.

Integrated tow trucks are often equipped with a wheel lift, boom, and extra axles. These features are important when hauling heavy vehicles, since the extra axle increases the stability of the tow truck. These trucks also feature movable arms that can clamp onto the wheels of the vehicle being hauled.
Flatbed recovery truck

The Flatbed recovery truck is a type of wrecker truck. Its flatbed structure allows it to safely load and transport a disabled car. These trucks are commonly used for long-distance towing. These vehicles are often based on medium or heavy-duty trucks. These vehicles have the strength needed to support a vehicle and have a variety of recovery methods.

Flatbed trucks can also be used to transport totaled vehicles. These vehicles cannot travel on their own, and the flatbed truck will use a winch to pull the vehicle up. Other names for this truck include rollback and slide trucks.
